Desert Islands

Posted from Nadi, Fiji by Daryl, 28 Jan 09 at 21:25

Had a bit of computer trouble at the end of our NZ trip and then escaped to remote islands, so no blog for a bit. Now in Fiji where it's very hot, very beautiful and the people are really friendly.
Nadi, the capital, is still shut after the floods but luckily the hotel we had booked is 8 Km away and OK apart from the roads being destroyed. We stayed for 2 nights on Bounty Island where Celebrity Island was filmed (not that we ever watched it- even if we did we wouldn't admit to it). Did some great snorkelling. We went out into the deep, decided to have a rest, and my mask and snorkel fell off my head and sank to the bottom. Chris, in trying to retrieve them (and failing), lost his snorkel which joined the others on the bottom. The story has a happy ending. He borrowed flippers and somehow managed to locate them in the vast empty ocean. My hero.
Island hopped to Malolo Levu and got a good deal on a 4 star resort. We knew it was 4 star because we were welcomed by a band in flowery shirts and cocktails were thrust into our hands as we landed. There were only 5 of us on the island due to flood cancellations and the credit crunch (hence the good deal). As there wasn't much to do Chris organised hermit crab races. We know how to enjoy ourselves.
Were woken up on both nights by marauding cattle that were shuffling about under the eaves of our thatched beach Bure. At 3.00am one night a horned bull got tangled up whilst appearing to climb into a hammock.
On the way back to the mainland the motor boat broke down in the middle of the empty ocean and we imagined a dramatic helicopter rescue (or drifting like castaways until we died of exposure and thirst). Luckily they got it going again and it only broke down once more before we were safely back to our original hotel.

You must be getting a bit panicky, with only a month of play time left. I must say that drifting out to a watery grave would certainly get me pretty freaked out. Being castaways is fine in theory, BUT..... As always, we look forward to your next instalment, with our usual 'Green with envy' expressions. Have a fantastic remaining couple of days in paradise.

We have just been catching up on your latest Blog, what a great time you have had in NZ. You both look well and happy in the pictures. It must have been really great travelling about in the motor home. It was clever of Chris to find your mask and snorkel in the sea. I don't think I would be brave enough to go snorkeling but I would not mind sitting in a mud pool full of hot water. Can you bring me back a grass skirt like the chap was wearing in the photo as Michael has an electric hedge trimmer and we have no hedge now! We were disappointed that there was no dramatic helicopter rescue as the TV news here is mainly about the failing economy (only Joking). Have a great time in Fiji.
